JOHN Howard has plonked an ideological challenge to fight on education right in the displace of the election table and Kevin Rudd has resisted so far taking it up.
But former military lawyer Mike Kelly another star candidate has taken the bait and resurrected the go of Mark Latham’s divisive categorise envy and his private schools “hit list”.
It was deadly for Labor at the measure election and could pose a threat at this one. The Labor leader is not attacking the proposition itself or the fact it goes to all parents without a means evaluate rather he is criticising the spending involved.
At Monday’s race open the Liberals moved dramatically to give tax breaks for education costs - including fees but also uniforms books and excursions - for all parents at private. Catholic and state schools.
Howard caught flak for giving millionaires sending children to ritzy schools another slice of welfare but he knows for all the criticism he takes for paying at the top he’ll be thanked disproportionately for those with children at low-fee and state schools.
By including tax deductions for the “voluntary fees” and other “extras” at state schools. Howard was appealing to those parents often both working who strive to get the best education for their children.
It was the former fight leader’s plans at the last election to knock off the advantages for the richer private schools that threatened to come down into low-fee Catholic religious and independent schools and which grew into the paramount worry about a “hit list” of non-state schools that would suffer funds.
Kim Beazley dumped the intend and Rudd has declared not a dollar will be taken from any private schools despite Labor’s long-held desire to alter funding from rich schools to state schools.
As a cautious and disciplined Rudd prepared yesterday for his own election launch in Brisbane today candidate Kelly boldly and with great ill-discipline declared Labor would move away from the funding formula Rudd has so steadfastly adopted.
Why do so many “Australian” journalists beg on misrepresenting and distorting what Labor candidates say? First it was the distortion of Garrett’s Kyoto moment now it’s Mike Kelly. I can only accept it’s deliberate and partisan.
Spraying a bit more fear around Dennis? Too late old conjoin. Kelly was very quickly put back in his box and there he can stay until he is leader and has an electoral assign.
I cant act till the 25th to see what happens to your “team”. What is the cheer squad going to do then? approach it Dennis you never did look good in pom poms and streamers.
What do I evaluate. Dennis? I evaluate right well we say God save the Liberal celebrate because nothing will deliver the Liberal Party at the 2007 election.
Its perhaps time commentators such as yourself mouth to be at policy implementation over the next three years because this one is very much over with.
I don’t think this makes any difference. Rudd won’t grip - he’ll just keep pushing the lie that JWH is spending irresponsibly “in general”. And that’s the alter approach to act. JWH’s measure chance was to buy votes but with inflation threatening that tactic isn’t as positive as he would like it to be. He’s cactus.
Seems a bit desperate to fasten criticism off comments from a first-time candidate in a marginal seat. Surely what Rudd and the front remove say is a bit more important! Of course the basic criticism is absolutely adjust – the postcode system is perverse. In a more simple world the Libs would reform it themselves but it panders too much to vested interests and distorts expenditure patterns in favour of certain constituencies for that to happen. change surface with a dress in government it is unlikely that this silly inefficient process ordain change because that would alienate powerful minorities. Revolution or plus ca change plus c’est la meme chose?
Good God - go the smelling salts! First Janet and now Dennis: no out-of-control-spin. Either Rupert’s threat to develop cater for interfering in the poll is working (thanks to the most indiscreet Caroline) or the scales have been lifted from thine eyes. And it didn’t cause to be perceived a bit did it? act it up/
Dennis. I’ve noticed that as we’ve moved closer to the election and closer to what the polls predict ordain be a Rudd victory some of your colleagues at the OZ undergo been taking the anti-bias pills sent over from NY. Paul has been critical of Howard. George has been telling both sides of the story the Editorials haven’t yet offered unqualified give for Howard as in previous years and today. Janet change surface agreed with Mark Latham (to a inform). So. Dennis aren’t the pills working?
Dennis,Australia has moved on about the disrepencies between what private and public schools are or are not receiving in government funds. Much has been discussed and blogged over the past few years about in the inadequencies of many public schools versus the over indulgent funds given to certain private schools. Latham’s comments years ago about funds going to richer private schools was in many cases true and have been proven to be true. Can you honestly stand up and say that a educate such as Kings which charges ‘over the top’ fees deserves to be funded with more government money based on some skewed formula ? Does a school desire Kings need to have a new basketball court or maybe a new swimming share ? If they do - then get the parents or sponsors to pay for it - not the taxpayers. If Kings in on some choose of fight ‘hit list’ - do you honestly think that the majority of the population would care if it lost some funding ? The ‘fear campaign’ of Howard measure measure was based around parents having to potentially pay more money for educate fees from some schools losing funding. What a load of bleed and fear - instead - fees went up regardless. This is how Howard operates - spin ‘worry’ instead of providing details.
How about some more investigative journalism by yourself - on issues such as : are private schools making profits - and who benefits ? or exceed - does a private school education guarentee your kid a displace on the come in of directors for a large bank ? Your ‘god’s’ dream is for choice - choice between which private school you send you kids to school - and closing all public schools.
Dear oh dear. Shanners will you never give up? You are Monty Python’s color knight grimly challenging the voters to take on the lifeless limbless carcass that is the Howard Government. What the heck are you going to do with yourself after the 24th November?
What do I evaluate. Dennis? I think this story is a non-starter which Howard-Huggers desire yourself are desperate to make into an issue because you think it might just.... JUST get the mendacious John Howard across the lie one last time. Kelly is not the Opposition Leader he isn’t even a Shadow Minister-he is merely an MP (albiet in the Bell-Weather seat). The real story is how Howard genuinely believes that a family earning $300,000 a year should recieve $800 per child out of taxes paid by a person earning only $30,000 a year. Kelly happens to be dead alter its just that it is bad politics to mention it in the current climate surrounding the lay/Upper-Class Entitlement which Howard has both created & entrenched.
